How to book a car in Montenegro is a five-minute job once you know the steps, and from Podgorica it is the same five minutes wherever the trip goes next. You search live prices for your dates, pick the car and cover that suit the trip, and confirm; the rest is showing up with your licence.
Search and compare

What you need to book
You need a valid driving licence held for the minimum period the car states, and a passport or ID. Paying for the rental does not require a credit card, but the deposit hold is the part most likely to want one, and that varies by car: many take a debit card or cash, and some hold no deposit at all. Add your flight number if you are collecting at the airport so the representative can track your arrival.
Cover and the deposit

Collection and drop-off
At the airport a representative meets you at arrivals; in town many cars can be delivered to your address. Check the car over together, photograph any marks, and you are away. To end the trip elsewhere, a one-way booking lets you drop at another city or airport.
What the price includes, and what it does not
The figure you confirm covers the car, third-party liability and whatever cover level you selected. The fuel terms are set per car and stated on your rental agreement, so read that line before you drive off. Which tier to take, and what each leaves you liable for, is the one decision worth slowing down for at checkout. Extras such as a child seat, an additional named driver, or a cross-border permit are added per car at checkout rather than bundled, which is why two listings at a similar daily rate can differ once your trip is priced properly.
Changing or cancelling
Free cancellation is offered on a good share of the fleet, around 176 cars of roughly 380, up to a stated cut-off shown on the listing before you pay. Changing dates is usually a re-quote rather than an edit, since availability and price move with the calendar, so cancel and rebook if the trip shifts materially. If your flight moves, send the new flight number: an airport collection is tracked against it and a short delay costs nothing.
At the desk, and at drop-off
Bring the licence, the passport or ID and the card used for the deposit. Walk around the car with the representative before you sign, photograph any existing damage including the wheels and the windscreen, and check the fuel gauge matches the paperwork. At drop-off the same check runs in reverse, and the deposit is released once the car is signed back in undamaged.
How far ahead to book
Earlier is better here for a specific reason rather than as general advice: the cheap end of the fleet is finite and it empties first. In July and August the economy and compact classes go weeks ahead, so a late booking is choosing from what is left at what is left of the price, and the gap between an early and a late booking is wider than the gap between two suppliers on the same day. Outside the peak the pressure comes off and a few days is usually enough. The way to book early without committing to plans you are not sure of is to filter for the cars offering free cancellation, which is marked in the results: on those, holding a car costs nothing and you can rebook if the trip changes shape. Automatics are the other reason to move early, since they are the larger part of the pool but also the part everyone wants.
The extras to settle at booking, not at the counter
A handful of things are much easier to arrange when you book and awkward to add later, and they are the usual causes of a slow handover. Cross-border cover is the big one: if there is any chance of driving into Albania, Bosnia or Croatia, it has to be on the booking so the car leaves with its documents ready. A second driver belongs there too, because a driver not named on the contract is not covered whatever tier you took. Child seats are fitted before you arrive rather than found in a car park. Winter equipment is a request to make on the booking rather than at handover, so the car is prepared before you collect it. And if you would rather start from your hotel than the airport, many cars can be delivered to a city address, which is arranged at the booking stage rather than by phone on the morning. The reason all of these belong at the same moment is that the booking is what the supplier prepares the car against. Everything on that list is something done to the vehicle or the contract before you arrive, so raising it at handover means either a delay or a no. Spending two extra minutes on the booking form is the whole of the trick, and it is why the collection itself takes so little time when people get this right. After you book, one of two things happens. A car marked for instant booking is confirmed straight away. A car listed on request is processed automatically within a few minutes, and you are emailed either a confirmation or the alternatives if it has gone. Neither needs chasing.
