Getting there and driving
Most drivers reach a Podgorica rental through Podgorica Airport, 12 km and about 15 minutes south of the centre on a fast dual carriageway. It is the closest airport for the north and east of the country, while Tivat on the coast is the alternative when the bay towns are your priority.
From the city the roads fan out quickly: the E65/E80 climbs north through the Morača canyon toward Kolašin and Žabljak, the westbound road drops to the Bay of Kotor in around 75 minutes, and Lake Skadar is barely 25 minutes down the Virpazar road, which carries on past Bar to the long beaches at Ulcinj. A couple of tunnels and long inclines punctuate the mountain routes, so start with a full tank.

Parking in Podgorica
Parking in Podgorica is easy by Montenegrin standards. The centre runs on colour-coded paid zones marked at the kerb, payable by SMS or at meters, and most hotels and malls have their own free or low-cost lots.
Overnight you can usually leave the car on residential streets outside the paid zones at no charge, and the Mall of Montenegro and Big Fashion car parks are handy when you want it covered. Away from the very centre parking is rarely a problem, which is one reason a rental works better here than in the coastal old towns.
Scenic drives and day trips
The classic day drive from Podgorica runs out to Lake Skadar for the Pavlova Strana viewpoint above Rijeka Crnojevića, then back through the vineyards of the Zeta plain. It is under an hour each way and needs no motorway.
For something bigger, the cliff-hugging road to Ostrog Monastery is about 50 minutes northwest, and the full coastal run to Kotor or Budva makes a comfortable day return. Drivers heading further afield often drop the car at the coast instead of returning it to the capital.
