Driving from Podgorica to Ulcinj
Ulcinj is the southernmost town on the coast, about 75 km and 75 minutes from the capital, close to the Albanian border. Its long sandy beaches are a different coast from the pebbles further north, and a rental is the easy way to reach them. If you are still deciding, start with the cheaper end of the fleet.
The road south
The route runs down through Bar and along the coast to Ulcinj, mostly easy driving with sea views on the final stretch. It is one of the more relaxed coastal runs from the capital, without the tight bends of the Bay of Kotor.
The beaches and parking
Ulcinj's old town sits above a small beach, while the vast Velika Plaža, a twelve-kilometre sweep of sand, stretches south toward the Bojana river. Parking is easier here than in the northern old towns, with lots near both the old town and the long beach.
A quieter corner
Ulcinj has a strong Albanian character and a slower pace than Budva, and Velika Plaža is popular with kitesurfers for its shallow water and wind. If you are combining it with a hop across the border, the cover you need for Albania is arranged when you book.
Timing the drive south
Seventy-five kilometres of good road makes this an easy run for most of the year, and a slower one in the fortnight either side of the August peak, when the southern coast fills up and the last stretch into town moves at the pace of the car in front. Mornings are the better half of the day in both directions. Ulcinj is far enough south that a day trip needs an early start to be worth the drive, which is why many people stay a night rather than turning round, and a rental kept for the whole trip makes that decision easy to take late. Coming back after the evening meal, when the coast has emptied, is the quiet run.
Beaches, the town and where the car fits
The two halves of Ulcinj want different things from a car. The old town sits above the harbour on narrow, steep streets where the smaller car is unambiguously better and the sensible move is to park below and walk up. Velika Plaža, the long sandy stretch south of town, is the opposite: spread out, approached by flat roads, with parking along its length, so the car is what makes the beach usable at all rather than a nuisance to store. Between the two, plan on leaving the car once and walking the old town rather than trying to drive through it, and keep valuables out of sight in the beach car parks as you would anywhere busy in summer.
Which car for the southern run
Seventy-five kilometres of straightforward road, so the class question is about the boot and the air conditioning rather than the engine. Beach days travel badly in a small car once there are four of you with towels, chairs and a cool box, and a standard estate or a crossover is the honest choice for a family; two people are well served by an economy hatchback that is easier to park in the old town lanes. Most of the pool is automatic. Each listing names the exact model and carries photographs of it, so the load space is something you can see rather than infer, and most cars come with no mileage cap if you carry on down the coast.
Cover, deposit and the border question
Every booking includes the free Minimum cover, the third-party liability set by law, with paid Basic, Full and no-deposit Full Plus tiers chosen at checkout and priced per car. Sand, salt and a summer car park make glass and wheel damage the likely claim on this coast, and that line begins at the Full tier. Most cars hold a refundable deposit on a card at pickup, a number carry none, and most cars need no credit card. The Albanian border is close enough that people cross on a whim, so if that is a possibility, arrange the cross-border cover when you book rather than at the counter; the car you collect in Podgorica has to be documented for it in advance. One practical note for a beach week down here: much of the parking near the long beach is unsurfaced, so the car comes back dustier than it went out. That is not damage and nobody treats it as such, but a car returned under a layer of sand is harder to check over quickly, so allow a few extra minutes at the handover or give it a rinse on the way back. In August the beach car parks fill from mid-morning and the ones nearest the sand are the first to go, so the choice is an early start or a longer walk. Neither needs a bigger car; the small one is easier to place in both. Take the usual care with what is left on show, and if you are staying down here for a few days rather than driving back the same evening, ask about delivery to your accommodation instead: it is offered on most cars and saves the collection detour entirely.
