Driving from Podgorica to the Tara Canyon
The Tara Canyon is the biggest day out from the capital: 160 km north to the deepest river canyon in Europe, crossed by the Durdevica Tara bridge. It is a long drive with real altitude, and the road is as much the point as the destination. If you are still deciding, start with keeping a long hire affordable.
Getting north
Take the motorway to Kolasin, then climb on through Mojkovac toward the canyon. The first hour is fast, the second is mountain road: slower, higher and more demanding, with long climbs and switchbacks.
Is it a day trip?
It is, but a full one. Nearly three hours each way means an early start and no dawdling if you also want to see the bridge, walk a little and eat. Many drivers stay a night at Zabljak instead and take in Durmitor on the same trip.
What to drive, and when
A standard car covers the paved route comfortably in summer. In winter the northern roads are a different proposition and winter equipment is required by law in season, so ask for winter tyres at booking if you are going between December and March.
Fuel and services on the northern leg
This is the one drive out of Podgorica where fuel deserves a thought rather than a shrug. Stations are plentiful on the motorway section and thin out once you leave it, so the habit that works is to fill before turning off toward the canyon rather than assuming you will pass something useful later. The same applies to food and to anything else you might want in the middle of the day: the northern stretch is sparsely served and the stops that exist are seasonal. None of this is difficult, it simply rewards a few minutes of planning at the start. Mobile coverage can be unreliable in the canyon, so downloading the route before you leave the motorway is worth doing.
The bridge, the viewpoints and where to stop
The Đurđevića Tara bridge is the anchor of the day and the natural turning point, but the drive there is punctuated by laybys that are the actual reason to do this in a car rather than on a tour. They are informal, they appear without warning, and the good ones are on the outside of bends, so the discipline is to slow early and pull in properly rather than stopping where you happen to be. Allow well over the driving time for that. In summer the bridge area is busy from mid-morning, with parking spread along the road either side, and a small car is easier to place. Out of season it can be nearly empty, and the same drive takes an hour less.
Booking for a long northern day
This is the drive where the mileage terms actually matter: 320 km before any detour to the bridge or the viewpoints, and more if you carry on to Zabljak. Most cars are supplied with no mileage cap, but it is the line to check on the listing rather than assume, because a capped car turns a good day into an expensive one. Diesel is well represented in the pool and suits the distance; an automatic takes the work out of the long climbs and descents through the canyon. Cover and the deposit before you head north
The free Minimum cover, the third-party liability required by law, is on every booking, and the paid tiers are chosen at checkout: Basic adds a collision waiver, Full extends it to glass and wheel damage, and Full Plus removes the deposit. On a route with rough verges, roadworks and stone chips off passing traffic, the glass and wheel line is the one worth reading twice. The deposit is a refundable hold on a card at pickup rather than a charge, and some cars are offered without one.
