The Clio is a small hatchback, and on a Podgorica rental that is usually the point rather than a compromise. The capital is easy to drive but its older streets are not generous, and a car that fits the gaps around Stara Varos is worth more on a two-week stay than any amount of extra power. Out of town it is at home on the roads these guides describe: the run south to Virpazar, the climb toward Ostrog, the fast road west to Niksic.

Two people with luggage are comfortable; four are fine for a day out rather than a fortnight. Because every listing names the exact model and carries its own photographs, you can judge the boot against your own bags before booking instead of trusting a class label. Most of the pool is automatic if you would rather not shift through the city roundabouts, and the manuals tend to sit at the cheaper end of the same list.

Book the Clio for a long stay in the city with day trips hanging off it. Look at something larger if the plan is four adults, a northern week with hiking kit, or the Durmitor roads in winter, where space and a bigger engine stop being luxuries.
